Ex-president of Romania Ion Iliescu has stated Monday that the referendum must be validated by the Constitutional Court of Romania (CCR) given that the real electorate of Romania consists of 15-16 million individuals, and the nine million that voted represent over 60% of the population, Mediafax press agency informs.

Iliescu said that the CCR mission wouldn't be easy given that it has to give a decision on the validation or invalidation of the referendum considering a „rigid“ stipulation introduced in the referendum law referring to the electoral threshold of 50% plus one.

Iliescu mentioned that this stipulation does not exist in Europe, being introduced in Romania as a result of great internal and international pressure and indicated that it is unnatural for CCR judges to make a decision based on such a rigid law stipulation given the approximately 50% presence.

Moreover, Iliescu said that Romania hadn't completed the census, but that it was obvious there was a negative demographic growth, plus two million Romanians that had left the country to work abroad.

Iliescu said that, in his opinion, in Romania there are 15-16 million people that have the right to vote, indicating that the nine million voters at the referendum represent over 60% of the population. He also thinks that the CCR judges can not elude this fact.

According to Ion Iliescu, the Constitutional Court should also take under consideration the boycott initiated by Băsescu and DLP (Democrat Liberal Party), considering that it is „shamefull“ for a president to resort to such a thing.
