Social Democrat Party (SDP) Honorary president Ion Iliescu stated Monday that the social-democrats have no fault to find with the behaviour of the ex-Interior minister, Ioan Rus. Iliescu argued that Rus made no mistake by publicly stating there are 18 million voters, although he pointed out that, in his opinion, the figure is inaccurate.

„It is a given fact - this instability that reflects in statistics and that is played upon in a dishonest manner. Eight and a half million voters are a given fact, but what can you relate to? How was Rus wrong when  he publicly stated that there are 18 million voters in Romania, nevertheless an inacurrate figure?“.

Iliescu admitted that the figures should have been clear and pointed out that now that the exact number of people on the electoral listed would be reached.

„Under these circumstances we must establish by law, by an annual check up, that all people who leave the country - they no longer pay taxes locally - should keep their civil right to vote, but when they do they do it on separate lists. So, annually, the administration must perform this check up and pull out from the permanent population records those who are abroad and when they return to be granted the right to vote again“, Iliescu stated.
