George Maior: His resignation from SRI also because of the failure to get the national security legislation adopted

The former head of the Romanian Intelligence Service (SRI), George Maior said Saturday at a television station that one of the reasons he resigned was linked to "the failure to adopt national security legislation and information," Mediafax reports.

George Maior recalled that, even before the completion of the presidential elections, he announced that he would submit his resignation with the new head of state and added that the decision to leave from office was similar to the practice in some European countries. "On the other hand, there is a certain routine settling and things have to be changed, it is a philosophy of life," he said, adding that he feels really good that has done this.

Also, Maior wanted to clarify that there were particular reasons related to the failure of passing through Parliament national security legislation and information regarding the three Big Brother laws: data protection, prepaid cards and cyber security bills, which were rejected by the Constitutional Court.
The former head of SRI noted that although there were no laws promoted by the Service, they were supported at conceptual level.

"If nothing is done at political, parliamentary level and there is no will to reconcile these laws with the Constitution, we could stand to lose in terms of the dynamics of international developments. (..) I was disappointed that these laws were not adopted and it represented a particular cause of the general materialization of my intention to leave the service leadership", Maior said.
He added that he did not regret that he had supported "perhaps too strongly " the laws package. "I stand by the ideas about trying to draw attention to more responsibility in the state in relation to national security in such difficult times", he said.
The former head of SRI showed that there has been much speculation on his resignation, but he stressed that it was a resignation and not a dismissal, adding that it was voluntary unilateral act.
"I had a very civilized discussion with President Iohannis in this regard", said Maior, adding that he agreed to communicate with the president on strategic issues. "I am always available for discussions with the President and the Prime Minister," said the former head of SRI.
