"I do not want to create an awkward moment, given that the President has consistently campaigned for a unicameral Parliament, thus abolishing the Senate, and the festivity of the June 17 will talk mostly not only about the tradition of the Senate, but also about the role of the Senate for the upcoming years, "Tăriceanu thus explained the removal from the anniversary guest list of President Traian Basescu.
The name of president Traian Băsescu was simply stricken off the guests lists.
The Senate President said that the Senate will have to become in time the representative chamber of the regions with clear and distinct responsibilities compared to the Chamber of Deputies
"I continue to believe, especially in a country like Romania, in the virtues of the bicameral system. Unfortunately, the President of Romania, during the whole period of his stay in the office, did nothing but discredit with a lot of determination and perseverance the institution of Parliament, so that in this festive time, I do not believe that his presence in the auditorium where we will celebrate this event is appropriate ", Tăriceanu insisted.
The Senate President added that he could make many ironic considerations about the President, but he did not consider it appropriate to adopt this kind of language.
The PDL senators leader, Dumitru Oprea, protested Tuesday before the plenum against the fact that president Traian Băsescu was not invited in the solemn meeting and the concert to be held in the Romanian Athenaeum to celebrate 150 since the establishment of the Senate, arguing that the president’s name was simply stricken off the guests list.
On June 17, the Senate plenary hall will hold a jubilee meeting commemorating the 150th anniversary of the establishment of this Chamber, and on Wednesday for the same event a concert will be held at the Romanian Athenaeum.
