The reason behind Adrian Năstase’s conviction - published 5 months after the sentence was ruled

The judges who have convicted Adrian Năstase in the Quality Trophy file have released for the public the reason for his sentence five months after the sentence was ruled, despite the fact that the legal term is of 30 days. The motivation has 470 pages and Năstase is the first head of Government to be serving his sentence in jail.

The magistrates of the High Court of Cassation and Justice claim that both Bogdan and Marina Popovici had made an agreement with Irina Jianu so that the money she received for the organization of the Quality Trophy event be transferred into the companies controlled by the above mentioned, and subsequently pay with that money all the electoral propaganda campaign used for Adrian Năstase’s elections.

‘It is irrelevant that, there were not any connections between the defendants and the defendant Năstase Adrian, direct or indirect (...) it is less important whether the defendants Popovici, were in their turn connected with defendant Năstase or they were involved in the criminal activity by one of the two defendants, as long as from the way they have fulfilled their role (moving the money from the source to the user), it is certain that the defendants Popovici not only assumed the entire criminal activity but the purpose pursed through that as well (the illegal financing of the defendant Năstase elections campaign). (...) Under these circumstance, the question arises whether such a big financing was only an initiative of the defendants involved, of which the defendant Năstase Adrian had no knowledge of.
