Former premier Adrian Năstase, currently imprisoned, is awaited with open arms by the PSD members. The party’s Congress has been scheduled for April 20, so that the former prime minister could attend it.


The PSD members are sure that by then, Năstase will be released from prison. Rumors say that in the upcoming Congress, Adrian Năstase might be appointed executive chairman of the party.

The position Adrian Nastase held within the PSD before his imprisonment has remained vacant and, most likely, there would be no elections before April 20 for this position, namely that of President of the National Council of PSD. This forum is a kind of shadow government of the Social Democrats and Nastase is still listed as president on the council’s website.


However, the decision to come back into politics is his, his colleagues in the party say, including Prime Minister Victor Ponta.

The PSD members have not put their former colleagues out of mind while in jail, he has been visited weekly by one or other party colleagues.


In this case, however, there is room for debate - Năstase is forbidden to hold any public office for two years. The PSD says, however that the party is a private entity and that the function is not a public one, but there are other think thanks stating the exact opposite.

Adrian Năstase has been imprisoned since June 26, 2012, after being sentenced to serve two years in prison ruled in the “Quality Trophy ” case file, whereby he was accused that he had illegaly fundraised for his elections campaign of 2004, when he ran for the Country’s presidency.


Adrian Năstase attempted to commit suicide on June 20, 2012, after receiving his final sentence to serve two years in jail for the “Quality Trophy” case file.

The former prime minister shot himself with a Smith and Wesson revolver, caliber 45. He turned the gun on his head, and due to the prompt intervention of the policeman who accompanied him the wound was not deadly.
