‘We have to underline that Romania fulfills all the technical criteria for accession and if it had not been for the state parliamentary coup of the last summer, then definitely, the JAI Council of October 2012 would have granted our accession to the Schengen area. It was not meant to be and among us nobody seems to take responsibility for it. On the contrary, those responsible for Romania’s postponed accession into the Schengen seem now to claim they have taken the country out from isolation’, the head of state declared. .
Speaking of austerity, the president said that we needed a competent Government after he had recently praised the Executive currently in office.
‘In Romania we are at the stage where macroeconomic balance has been restored, what we would need is a competent government to generate sustainable economic growth and jobs. European money are available for us. All we need is competency and correctness to use them’, Traian Basescu said.
Regarding the benefits of the EU membership, the President said that from January 1, 2014, there will be no restrictions for Romanian citizens in any of the EU countries.
However, confidence in the EU seems to have decreased after the organization failed to keep its word. "The EU has not delivered what it had promised - jobs, economic recovery. Sincerity is needed in communicating with citizens," Basescu said.
