Deputy Secretary General of PSD, Codrin Stefanescu, addressed Saturday to former President Traian Băsescu an open letter, pointing out that the former president “cannot talk about human rights" because he had violated them for ten years, during his two presidential terms, Agerpres reports.

"You are the last person in Romania who should be talking about human rights. Because you and your clique have violated all of them for ten years," says Codrin Stefanescu.

He stated, among other things, that Traian Basescu and his supporters used the "state institutions in their own interest to close the mouth of all his political opponents", giving the examples of Adrian Nastase, Dan Voiculescu and Gigi Becali.

The social democrat leader also adds that Traian Basescu has never defended the “positive development of the state", but instead he "blackmailed, even from the rostrum of Cotroceni, a senator of Romania - Gabriela Firea, and her family, only because she was part of the parliamentary committee investigating the abuses whereby he (Basescu -) had acquired the real estate from Nana ".
According to the PSD deputy general secretary, for ten years, Traian Basescu has done nothing but "promoted scandals, conflicts, abuse and theft, leaving a whole nation divided".
Former President Traian Basescu announced on Friday that he enrolled in the People's Movement Party (PMP).

"The first and most important reason for my return in politics is related to what has been happening since December 22, 2014. A sustained campaign of denigration of the two terms that I’ve had at Cotroceni, a denial of the transformations the country went through in this period of ten years, extremely important transformations that strengthened the rule of law. And also the huge effort being made by the media, and to my surprise by the state institutions that I strengthened during my mandates, to discredit me, personally. Therefore, the only solution I have is to return to the political life, to defend my two mandates and to defend myself against this waive of denigrations, " Traian Basescu said in a statement at the PMP headquarters.

The former head of state added that another reason for his return to politics is linked to human rights.

"I have found that during these 11 months since the completion of my mandate, I should have added something to the vision and effort to strengthen state institutions and I did not do it. I'll do that now, as a politician of the opposition, namely the observance of human rights. (...) An individual, though guilty he is still entitled to a fair investigation and a fair trial. Not a trial conducted according to media campaigns that the magistrates should follow taking decisions against life, against the man’s freedom, " Basescu said.
