Traian Basescu made monumental blunders in foreign policy, and President Klaus Iohannis now has a duty to correct these mistakes, writes Dan Voiculescu on his blog.

Voiculescu notes that the current president has to strengthen the position of Romania before our foreign partners.

The last 10 years have been marked by monumental blunders in foreign policy and diplomacy, says Professor Dan Voiculescu. The founding president of the Conservative Party writes on his blog that all this led to the compromise of Romania's long-term relationships with foreign partners.

"Although it is the most important presidential prerogative, Basescu has never understood that diplomacy cannot be conducted in whatever way. Not with bows nor with threats. In 1990, we proposed two courageous strategies at the time: Romania should set a free zone regime in Sulina and Agigea. Romania should promote a comprehensive program of repatriation of Romanians working abroad at that time. The Petre Roman government and those that followed did not understand how important it was for Romania to implement these strategies " Dan Voiculescu writes in a post on his blog.

Dan Voiculescu argues that his proposal of 25 years ago are no longer valid today. The founding president of the Conservative Party believes that President Klaus Iohannis could fix the mistakes made by the Basescu regime in the foreign policy strategy adopted.

“Therefore, it requires a strategy able to quickly repair the disasters of Basescu's mandates. My vision is that there will follow significant changes in the world, in the inter-state relations and the relations between the state and its citizens. I think President Iohannis already envisages a balanced position in Romania’s foreign policy so that our country can become not only a bridge between the EU and Russia, but also between the EU and the US. Acting smart, subtle and in moderation, Romania can position itself above its effective force in economic, political or military terms. We do not need opponents and should not exclude relations with other countries outside the European Union. In fact, they do not exclude them either, on the contrary, they develop them, " Dan Voiculescu writes on his blog.
