Asked why he thought he would make a good president of Romania, Prime Minister Ponta said: "First of all, I think Romania should demonstrate its neighbors - Moldova, Ukraine and Georgia - that a country’s success is a European and pro-Atlantic project. As premier, I managed not only to keep the country in this direction, but to improve the economic and prosperity of the people. "
Victor Ponta said that Romania registered last year a significant economic growth. "Last year, we managed to have the fastest growth. We have an unemployment rate below 7% and a small deficit. It is important to continue the structural reforms," the Prime Minister of Romania said.
Regarding the current conflict situation between Ukraine and Russia, the prime minister said that the economic sanctions against Russia are meant to demonstrate to President Putin that "the illegal actions cannot go on unpunished."
In this context, the Prime Minister also said that energy independence and strong institutions are elements of extreme importance.
