The Social Democrat Party's (PSD) deputies leader, Valeriu Zgonea, has been elected as the new president of the Chamber of Deputies, Romanian Parliament's inferior chamber. The vote was held during a special session Tuesday evening.

The former governing coalition’s deputies, members of the Democratic Liberal Party (PDL) and Democratic Union of the Hungarians in Romania (UDMR), din not participate at the proceedings. A total of 177 deputies were present.

After being elected, Zgonea raised to the Chamber's tribune and declared this a very important moment in his life, for which he worked assiduously. He thanked the colleagues that voted for him and also "the millions of pensioners that felt something was changing today in Romania".

"I would like to thank the people that felt humiliated for three and a half years and felt that in the Romanian Parliament the one that is leading doesn't represent them but humiliates them. I would like to thank those people that felt that the Government's assumptions of liability for passing laws or wrong counting of votes doesn't represent them. I would also like to thank a man that, a few years ago, gave me the most eloquent example that Roberta Anastase brought this institution on a wrong path, mister Sobaru, who made probably the strongest political statement this Parliament had ever seen".

Roberta Anastase was revoked from the position of president of the Camber of Deputies, after a vote of 160 pro and 1 against.
