Victor Ponta and Kelemen Hunor will hold Wednesday talks that will conclude in a clear decision related to the UDMR leave or stay in the government.
If Hungarians decide to leave the Executive, the Ponta Cabinet can keep on governing with a consistent Parliament majority. Specifically, from the overall 575 senators and deputies, the Government can rely on 331 votes without UDMR. On the other hand, the opposition would only collect 244 votes, by 44 less votes than needed to pass a censure motion.
The PSD-UNPR-PC alliance safety net are the 15 MPs supporting the project of Călin Popescu Tăriceanu. To that, another 15 deputies and a senator are added from the PPDD, a political party that concluded a collaboration protocol with the PSD. Overall, 31 votes compared to 26 the number UDMR has.
Tensions between UDMR and PSD intensified after the Foreign Ministry made an intervention in a lawsuit at the European Court of Justice, where Hungarians contested the decision of the European Commission. The Commission rejected a citizens' initiative last year whereby minority rights would be strengthened.
