Former gymnast Corina Ungureanu will run as independent in the European Parliament elections
Former gymnast Corina Ungureanu announced Tuesday her independent candidacy for the European Parliament elections to be held next year. She resigned from PSD, the party she was enrolled in, in order to be able to run as an independent, Mediafax reports.

Former world champion, Corina Ungureanu has been adviser for sports to the mayor of Ploiesti and she has announced her decision to run as an independent for a MEP term in the elections scheduled for 2014.

Corina Ungureanu went public with her decision in a press release with her name in the header accompanied by the slogan "Think freely!."

To be able to candidate, Corina Ungureanu decided to quit from PSD, the party whose member she had become a year before, after quitting her UNPR membership.

"After I have carefully studied the laws governing the organization and conduct of the European elections and after I have reviewed bias free the facts existing in the present moment on the Romanian political scene, I have decided to run on my own as independent. To conform with the statutory provisions that expressly provide the European elections do not allow independent candidacies from political party members, I have resigned the Social Democratic Party, " Corina Ungureanu said in the press release.

"I am counting on the support of all Romanian citizens who think freely and believe in the essential role the civil society plays in a functioning democratic system", the gymnast said. it

Corina Ungureanu is double champion with the gymnastics team in 1997 and 1999, European champion in 1998 and European champion with the team on the floor competition in 1998.

Ungureanu is not coaching, she explained that the projects she worked on as adviser to the Mayor of Ploiesti did not leave her enough time to coach.
