
The workers’ salaries varied little back then, resembling the ones registered nowadays: Therefore, the net average income per economy was in 1989 nearly 3000 lei (200 dollars), currently, the net average income per economy is 1.700 lei (515 dollars).
The construction workers and the miners used to have the best salaries, followed by those working in the fields of gas, electricity and banking, while at the opposite end, there were those working in tourism, food industry, restaurant etc, with an average monthly income of 1500 lei.
Nicolae Ceaulşescu’s official salary amounted to 18.000 Romanian lei (around 1200 dollars at the official exchange rate back in 1989). Out of this amount, Ceausescu would deposit monthly at the CEC Bank 5.000 lei in his children bank account.
