"Romania (can) prove through concrete measures that it provides access to the Schengen area with a secure identity document, adjusted to the international standards," representatives of MIA stated.
Therefore, starting with the summer of 2013, Romanian citizens will be issued biometric identity cards, which will contain a digital fingerprint and a customized chip.
A regular ID card will contain data in printed or laser-engraved format, and the full name of the holder, sex, nationality, the date and place of birth, handwritten signature, photo holder, the personal identification number and the home address, as well as customization and security features.
Instead, the biometric smart identity card will also include the holder’s parents name, digital certificates, biometric data of the holder, consisting of facial image and fingerprints of two fingers impressions images.
Moreover, the biometric card grants a higher protection degree against identity theft, the specialist from the Records Office within MIA stated.
