The Town Hall Plan: Oprescu wants to gather 80% of the stray dogs off the streets in one year and a half
Mayor Oprescu, announced Monday that he plans to gather 80% of the stray dogs off the streets over the next year and a half.

However, the mayor urged that stray dogs be adopted and said his plan would reduce by 90% the number of people bitten by dogs.

"Our plan is to gather at least 80 percent of stray dogs off the streets and reduce by 90 percent the number of people bitten by dogs. The authority for the Supervision and Protection of Animals assumes that in 300 working days, i.e. 18 calendar months, at a rate of 150 to 250 dogs per day, 80 percent of stray dogs in the streets can be captured", Oprescu said at the presentation of his action plan on the stray dogs issue.

An emergency line for complaints filing is opened (021.9844), where citizens can report the existence of dog packs, dangerous dogs and possible attacks, as well as an emergency line for adoptions (0800.800.877), along with the public information plan, set to encourage adoptions

The mayor said that gathering stray dogs off the streets is to be made by a well-set plan, priority will be given to kindergartens, nurseries, schools areas, and busy streets.

"Matei Bals Institute confirms that 11,800 people were bitten last year alone by dogs without owner. I’ve specified that this refers to stray dogs. Because the rest of about 5,000 people bitten were attacked by dogs in their own backyard”, added the mayor.

Currently, the City has 800 seats for stray dogs: 200 in the Pallady Street shelter and another 600 in Mihăileşti. The Mihailesti facility can be extended, adding another 500 seats.
