The number of complaints from private operators in Romania on EU funds fraud has increased in recent years, the  Director General of the European Anti-Fraud Office (OLAF), Giovanni Kessler said.

The head of OLAF stated that, although the statistics of 2012 indicate that in Romania the number of convictions in such cases was  not "satisfactory" and that there were still  things that needed improvement, on the overall, however, there had been noticed  an  increase in the efficiency of the judicial action.

"This is proof that your country has the will to respond  befitting to   this  type of crime and provide  a proper signal to the public that European funds are protected," Kessler said, who added that the cooperation with FAFD, DNA and the Prosecutor general is excellent in most cases, Mediafax informs.

He stressed that under  recess and with less money   available for investment, the correct  spending  of the  European funds was very important as a source of development and ensuring social protection for EU citizens.

The DLAF last year’s activity report  shows  that in 2012 the number of the control actions conducted by the  Directorate has more than doubled compared to the 2010 and 2011average,  the number of notices of default increased 26 times, the number of completed actions doubled, the number of audited  projects increased almost five times and the number of rulings passed  in cases involving  European funds increased by 55%.
