Ponta: I have no objection against Germany, but towards those who curse and abuse Romania
Premier Victor Ponta stated Sunday night that he had no objection against Germany regarding the Schengen accession, but towards those in Romania who “swear and abuse Romania” in Brussels and Berlin and who were happy to see us sink after they had made holes in the boat”.

The Premier emphasized again that the Government would not give up its objective of accessing the Schegen Area but that he awaited a “favorable political framework”, which also depended on those who cursed and abused Romania in the European capitals.

“ I have no objection against Germany. I have a reproach to make to those in Romania who do not understand that they are harming the country by cursing and abusing Romania in Brussels and Berlin, because unfortunately, they too belong in this country”, Ponta stated at Ion Iliescu’s book launch occasioned by the former leader’s birthday.

He showed that this objective was important and beneficial not just for the Government and the USL but for those who “were denouncing everywhere”.

“If here in Romania we have all kinds of happy persons, the smart guys who show you the holes in the boat and then they are happy we are sinking, as if only the Government entered Schengen, or only the USL?”. Isn’t that they too would enter, those who keep denouncing us everywhere, announcing us why we won’t make it. That’s Romania’s weakness, you will always have somebody who enjoys seeing you go down, seeing everybody going down. From now on we will try to ignore them as much as we can and reach our European objectives with more dignity and more wisdom”, the premier said.

He pointed out that a first favorable moment for the Schengen accession might show up in October, after the general elections in Germany, if not “then the next year”.

“Of course, after October, but especially in October, fortunately is after September, after the elections, then we will see if a decision can be taken. If not, then next year(...). I am mainly referring to the fact that, just as the Netherlands shaded its tone and position after the elections, I am sure, the same will happen in the other European countries. I repeat, our problems arose from within Romania and if we have solved them, we are now awaiting for the moment and the political context”, he stated.

He also wanted to remind the former premier Emil Boc that he too had gone through the same “hilarious” moment regarding the rejection of the Schengen accession in 2011. “I have stated very clearly, it is already hilarious to debate every time, but not just us, I believe Mr. Băsescu and the BOC Government too. Now Mr. Boc has trouble remembering, he forgets that back in 2011 when he was prime minister and we got rejected they cried out against Finland and the Netherlands”, Ponta stated.

He also pointed out it was “silly” to believe that the statement made Sunday by the German Minister for Internal Affair announcing he would use his veto right at the JHA Council of 7-8 March regarding Romania and Bulgaria’s accession to Schengen would have anything to do with the political statements made in Romania over the recent days, as Berlin’s position had been well known to the Government.

“This is really stupid to imagine that the German Minister for Internal Affairs read yesterday the Romanian newspapers and started making statements. That’s really hilarious. We knew about Germany’s idea, of course, normally and diplomatically I would not want to make an announcement because the country was burning, but we were all aware that Germany fostered reservations related to this decision”, Ponta added.

The Federal Minister for Internal Affairs in Berlin, Hans-Peter Friedrich stated in an interview for the Spiegel that he would oppose Romania and Bulgaria’s accession into the Schengen Area using Germany veto right at the JHA Council of 7-8 March.
