The Prime Minister delivered this speech in the Palace of Parliament at a debate on NATO, after having had, a meeting with the U.S. charge d'affaires in Romania, Duane Butcher at the Government headquarters.
The discussion with the U.S. official took place in the framework where the United States have asked Romania to allow the expanding of their operations in the Kogalniceanu military based, namely to allow the deployment of elements of a Marine infantry unit and of a number of military aircraft, so that the number of U.S. troops deployed would reach 1,600.
Ponta showed that recent events in Ukraine and Crimea demonstrated that the region still holds potential insecurity issues and, in fact, nothing is absolutely safe in terms of security in the region, thus requiring a new strategy and an adjustment of theNATO countries to what happened and "what will happen in the immediate future."
“I try every time to see any potential danger as an opportunity and I would like to say that this unprecedented crisis over the last years must serve to all of us to realize what we need to do in the immediate future. First of all, I see this crisis as an opportunity for the relationships between the European Union and the United States of America to become again the center point of collaboration for global security”, Ponta said quoted by Mediafax.
Disagreements on various issues between Europe and the U.S. will disappear quickly in this period, and a news strategy will be developed to enhance cooperation between the two parties, including from an economic and trade standpoint, Ponta said.
