The mayor of St. Gheorghe, Antal Arpad, the UDMR local leader, said Saturday in a conference entitled "Autonomy and regionalism – the decade’s challenges " that local and county authorities are the bastion whereby Hungarians may retain national identity and develop their culture, Mediafax reports.
Antal made the statement in the context of a roundtable discussion where the PNL President of the Saint Gheorghe branch, Madalin Guruianu, asked why there was no reciprocity in the Hungarian community requests, ie why he never agreed to appoint in leadership positions Romanian ethnics in Covasna, given that in the areas where Hungarians are in minority they are asking for vice mayor or county council deputy chairman positions.
“I have a public proposition to make to the representatives of the Romanian community. We are willing to make a deal, respectively if they support our approach on autonomy and we will be a special status region, then we will guarantee that members of the Romanian community can hold management positions. I find it absolutely normal for it to be this way, but the principle of ethnic proportionality should be applied everywhere, that is including in the Gendarmerie or the Police”, Antal said.
St. Gheroghe mayor added that reciprocity is a topic worth discussing since both Romanians and Hungarians stand to gain from it as they would be granted access to positions currently out of their reach.
Several experts, Romanian and Hungarian politicians participated Saturday in St. Gheorghe, in a conference entitled "Autonomy and regionalism - the decade’s challenges" organized by the CNMT and the Bálványos Institute. On this occasion , a round table was held gathering for talks the mayor of St. George, Antal Arpad (UDMR), the CNS President Izsak Balazs, PNL Covasna chairman, Senator Marius Obreja, local leader of the Liberal party Mãdãlin Guruianu and the PPMT leader Tibor T. Toro.
