IICCMER asks the Prosecutor’s office attached to the High Court of Cassation and Justice to start the criminal prosecution of Ion Ficior accused of genocide.
Ion Ficior is charged with 103 crimes.
"The Institute for the Investigation of Communist Crimes and the Memory of the Romanian Exile asked the Prosecutor's Office attached to the High Court of Cassation and Justice to start criminal prosecution against Ion Ficior, former commander of the Periprava labor colonies, charged with genocide," said Wednesday, the IICCMER CEO, Andrei Muraru.
He said that after the investigations carried out by the representatives of the Institute, evidence was identified indicating that, while Colonel Ion Ficior (85 years old ) served as commander of the Periprava labor colonies, respectively during 1958-1963, political prisoners were subjected to extremely harsh detention conditions, being starved and beaten to death.
Ion Ficior instated in the Periprava labor colony an abusive detention regime, punitive, aimed against political prisoners, considered a threat to the new regime, Muraru said.
The Institute has collected documents proving that in the period Ion Ficior managed the Periprava labor colony , 103 prisoners died, all convicted of political offenses, the evidence being submitted to the Prosecutor.
IICMER identified over 50 survivors from Periprava labor colonies and took 21 testimonies from former political prisoners.
"The deaths registered during the mandate of colonel Ion Ficior are a characteristic of the detention regime instated by him and represent the prerequisites for the establishment of an extermination regime of political prisoners," Muraru said.
