Romanian tennis player Sorana Cirstea was eliminated in the round of sixteen of the Australian Open, being defeated, in two sets, 6-2, 6-3 by Spaniard Garbine Muguruza, seventh favourite of the competition, during a match on Sunday in Melbourne.

Cirstea (26 years old, #78 WTA) will be awarded a check worth 220,000 Australian dollars and 240 WTA points, after her first accession to this stage of the Grand Slam tournament down under.

Romania's representative had managed two previous qualifications to the third round of the Melbourne tournament, in 2012 and 2013.

Sorana Cirstea's best performance in a Grand Slam tournament remains the quarterfinal played in 2009 in Roland Garros.

Spaniard Garbine Muguruza, who defeated Sorana Cirstea after 65 minutes of play, will have a difficult mission in the quarterfinals as she is to meet the winner of the match between Angelique Kerber, the reigning champion and #1 in the world, and American Coco Vandeweghe.
