The number of people who register overdue debts to banks and NBFIs reached 735,000 in May

The number of individuals registered with overdue debts to banks and non-banking financial institutions (NBFIs) increased by 2.79% in May compared to April 2013, reaching 735,500, according to the data issued by the National Bank of Romania (BNR) quoted by Agerpres.

The number is higher by 20 031 people, compared to the previous month, and by 9. 119 lower than the level registered in May 2012.

As far as the number of overdue debts is concerned, it reached 1,012,649, with 29,662 more (3.01%) than the level registered in April 2013 and by 4139 over the level of May 2012.

According to central bank data, the overall arrears rose in May by 3.21% compared to April, reaching more than RON 10.232 billion. Of the overall value of arrears, over RON 7.333 billion registered over 90 days delays.

Also, out of the approximately RON 10.232 billion in overdue debts, up to 4.215 billion were overdue payments to loans contracted in Euros, RON 3.855 billion were overdue installments to loans contracted in the national currency, RON 2.129 billion were pending to be paid to loans contracted in other currencies while approximately RON 32.2 million were to be paid to loans contracted in U.S. Dollars.

The NPL ratio reached 20.19% in May, up by 0.73 percentage points from the previous month. In April, the NPL ratio stood at 19.46% and in 2012 at 16.67%.
