Asked if there would be war, the president replied: "Absolutely not, there will not be a war in the Black Sea region, nor will it be in Ukraine, I would say and in Crimea even less. So rule out war."
Basescu said he expected the referendum to favor attachment of Crimea to Russia to amount to about 70-75% of the voters, not 96.6%.
The President said that after the referendum, from a military point of view nothing changes in the Crimea and the Russian Federation will keep the fleet in the Black Sea, the number of troops will be still 25,000, as many as previously set in the agreement, and military activities will be the same.
"There is no way Romanians should fear aggression against Romania from the Russian Federation or Ukraine," the president said.
"If we had faced an immediate danger, imminent, I would have said it and the Army’s alert level would have been completely different" continued President Basescu, adding that the current military alert level is common.
Basescu has added that Romania does not have any "direct security risk" but the "regional risks are growing."
