Bucharest is the stray dogs heaven. There is no neighborhood not to pride itself with a pack. Many of the animals are fed by pet lovers, who are reluctant to take them at home.
The Romanian’s responsibility goes only halfway. After they feed the stray dogs, defending them from the dogcatchers, they complain that the number of stray dogs is increasing.
“I collect food and feed them. They aren’t my dogs, they live around the park. I pity them. It does bother me that they are so many, but that’s the authorities problem”, a pet lover says.
“The people who have placed cages before their blocks, do not comply in the least with the norms in force. We will not tolerate that. We set up a mixed committed with the Bucharest Sanitary Veterinary department and we will remove those cages, Răzvan Băncescu explained, the coordinator of the ASPA project”.
Experts say the problem is not only of the authorities but also of the people who believe that their gesture helps stray dogs. In reality, the effect is the opposite.
“The dogs range among the top 5 problems that must be solved. It is a merciful, a caring act, but also an act of irresponsibility. Because there are very many who state they adopt dogs only to rescue them from the dogcatchers. Then, around 80% of the dogs adopted are left on the streets”, anthropologists Vintilă Mihăilescu says.
Romania is leader in Europe as far as dogs density is concerned: over 65,000. A simple computation would show that means around 30 dogs for each inhabitant of Bucharest.
The authorities embarked on a stray dogs sterilization program which in three years is expected to be effective.
