For over more than 20 years authorities have struggled to find a solution to this challenge.
Last year, 3000 children were dog bitten in Bucharest. This year’s statistics shows no improvement. In the first 5 months of 2013, only the Institute for Infectious Diseases "Matei Bals" Bucharest has admitted over 4,000 children and adults bitten by stray dogs.
The biggest problems are in the 6th district, especially in Drumul Taberei neighborhood. Here, in the first half of this year, there were nearly 500 incidents reported where people have been attacked by stray dogs. Other two hundred took place in district 4. The fewest problems seem to be, according to authorities in District 1: 32 people dog bitten people in half a year.
The maintenance costs for one dog reach 400 lei per month. It comes as no surprise that many of the dogs are left on the streets.
In 2006, the death of a Japanese businessman bitten by a dog shocked everybody, but they got over it and dogs are still populating the streets. The only dog in Romania accused of manslaughter , Bosquito, was adopted and now he lives the remaining of his life in Germany.
